HOW TO: Warm Lemon Tea Detox (+ a free PDF)

The first thing you probably think of when you hear lemon is sour. Or maybe yellow or lemonade.¬†It could also possibly that nasty flavor in virtually every candy bag. That’s completely understandable.¬†I, personally, think of all four at the same time which I think is actually virtually impossible so I probably don’t do that. Anywho, I had many run-ins with lemon¬†water before I decided to make it apart of my morning ritual. As¬†someone who is constantly looking for ways to better herself, I asked my sister for an easy, natural way to balance my pH, which has been known to¬†throw your body out of whack when off balance (Side effects include: acne, body odor, dry skin, unhappiness, etc etc). She¬†sighed, and reluctantly told me to try fresh lemon tea, then asked me why I didn’t look it up my self.¬†I ignored the last part, and asked her to tell me how to make it. I drank it¬†everyday for¬†about a week, until I¬†forgot. Then tried it again months later as part of a diet we were trying, and stopped¬†(the diet and the regular drinking of lemon water) as soon as I had a craving for turkey burgers.¬†¬†One brisk morning, after realizing that we were out of apple-cinnamon tea, I decided to try it again and have since stuck with it.

As a part of my morning ritual, I drink 10 oz of warm lemon water. But before I get into how it’s down here are some of the benefits of drink fresh lemon tea–

Interesting Facts, Tips, and Benefits:

  • the d-limonene found in lemons is being used to dissolve gallstones associated with cancer. In other words, it has promising anticancer properties.
  • Fresh lemon juice aids in digestion and¬† relieve symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn.
  • The pectin fiber helps fight hunger craving and aids¬†with weight loss.
  • reduces inflammation much like the turmeric mask but all over your body and joints.
  • antiseptic properties freshen breath
  • It helps to fight and prevent viral infections and colds. Though you can drink cold, drinking warm heightens the enzymes and helps calm sore throats.
  • the enzymes make you happier and the lemon water can (and should) be used in replace of coffee in the morning.

Directions:

It is incredibly easy to make, but it varies depending on your weight. Because I am under 150 pounds, I am supposed to drink somewhere between 8 and 12 oz of water, so I drink 10.

Boil one cup of water, and squeeze a half a lemon into your cup. That’s it. Do not drink boiling and burn your tongue, because that won’t help any, and you can always juice the lemon using an electric¬†juicer, but just make sure it is one ounce,¬†for¬†150 lbs and under and that it is fresh no matter your weight.¬†You can¬†ignore any seeds you may get, but stomach the pulp if you can, it contains many health benefits. If it is over 12 oz, drink over the course of a couple of hours because your body can only metabolize 12 oz of water at a time.

HOW TO: Indian Turmeric and Greek Yogurt Face Mask

So I was having a bad face day. You know, one of those days when your skin is extra dry, and you look at least 50 years older than you actually are? Where it feels like no matter how much lotion you put on you are still dry? Yeah, one of those days.

I’m sure there is a logical reason for this. Like, a monster came and sucked the moisture out of my skin while I was sleeping or I am in some freak re-run episode of Grimm and a spinnetod wesen has desiccated the skin on my face.¬†It could also be because it has gotten colder, and we have been keeping the heater on longer than usual so it has dried out¬†my skin. Or the fact that I live in the middle of the desert so it is naturally dry here. It’s all plausible, but I am going for the re-run Grimm episode.

Anywho,¬†before this dry skin debacle,¬†my sister and I had looked up a new, healthy, natural face mask that we could use on our skin when we got the chance. Though we had heard about it before, we decided to look up a yogurt and turmeric face mask after watching an episode of The Mysteries of Laura where Meredith Bose mentions what she uses on her skin to make it look like that of a pre-pubescent boy (man, I watch a lot of TV).¬†Her skin regimen includes a yogurt and turmeric mask. And because of my bad skin day I decided to use a similar mask. It consists of Greek yogurt, honey, and turmeric. Despite the obvious, here’s why you should use it:

The Benefits:

  • Turmeric has natural anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.¬† These properties, help soothe¬† and promote healing in acne-prone skin. They also reduce redness and inflammation¬†characterized by eczema, which two of my sisters actually had when they were younger.
  • Women in India and other parts of Asia use the combination of honey, yogurt, and turmeric¬†to promote skin rejuvenation and soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
  • Regular use also may reduce¬†the redness and small pimples associated with rosacea.

Now for that good-good

Warning: For fairer skin tones, this may temporarily dye your skin.This appears as more of a glow than anything and lasts only a few days.

Directions:

Rinse face with luke warm water and pat dry. Mix together a spoonful of yogurt (enough for a single use, first try), a teaspoon of organic honey, and around a tablespoon or¬†two¬†of turmeric to the point that it is¬†a bright yellow. While face is still slightly damp (not dripping) use your clean finger tips to slather the yogurt mixture onto your face and neck. Try to avoid your hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows (unlike me)– If done too many times it will dye those as well. Keep on for 20-30 minutes. It will tingle slightly and it will smell strongly of turmeric, but in the end, you hardly notice and the time passes by quicker than you’d think.

After that, you rinse your face and neck, pat¬†them dry and apply your favorite moisturizer. That’s it. That alone restored my faith in my skin.

I have started doing this a couple of times a month and have thoroughly enjoyed it. But remember, it does stain your skin slightly (more so the lighter your skin), but more in a slight glow than anything. A couple of days ago I made a list of Happy New Years in 15 different languages. I have now made a list of 13 different ways to say happy new year in English. So, consider this a part 2 to the first list and my last hoorah for 2014.

HOW TO: Say ‘Happy New Year!’ in 15 Different Languages Other Than English

2014 is ending and the New Year is coming quickly now that Christmas is over. For me, this year has been full of discoveries and realizations.¬†I would go into that but I don’t really remember all of the discoveries and/or realizations. But I will say,¬†it has been slow and fast, easy and hard, happy and sad–¬†truly a¬†big ball of contradictions, but I am glad I went through it so that I will not have to go through it ever again. Ever.

Now, I know that not all countries and religions celebrate the New Year on January 1st. What I am not sure about is whether all countries and/or religions even celebrate the new year. But, I have, regardless, procured a list of happy new years in 15 different languages other than English.

How To Make A Gluten-Free Open-Faced Smoked Salmon Sandwich (The Perfect Go-To Breakfast!)

I had breakfast again today, guys (shocker, I know). And it was so fantabulous, I decided to share it with you all. It started out as a late breakfast, and the only reason I was eating was because my mom insists that I¬†eat¬†for some strange¬†reason.¬†She says, “It’s necessary to live.”¬† I think she’s lying. ¬†But, despite my skepticism, I went into the kitchen looking for something to eat. At first my attempts were fruitless, as I picked up multiple types of snacks (chips, nuts, popcorns, and the likes) and decided I wanted none of them. My stomach growled as I realized I was indeed hungry and I was not finding food fast enough to feed the stomach that was currently chewing on my arm (guess the reference and tell me in the comments below!). And as it turns out, you do need food to live. So, with my head held low in shame for having been wrong about human mortality, I grabbed the gluten-free bread to begin making my perfect¬†go-to breakfast.

My family and I don’t use toasters, so, I start with a heated pan (fairly high depending on your stove top and pan type), with no oil in it, to “toast” the bread.¬† After that I added mayonnaise. I prefer Hollywood’s safflower oil mayonnaise because it is much lighter and less salty (also high in antioxidants and vitamin E which is a plus), but if you don’t have that olive oil mayonnaise also works, which is actually what I used in these pictures because we¬†are out of the other kind.

With mayonnaise comes great responsibility, so I also added a little bit (okay, a lot) of Dijon mustard (my favorite, doesn’t really matter what brand you get as long¬†as it doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup or sodium nitrites (and all that good bad stuff in it– keep note, that is just a joke it really is bad for you) in it.)¬†While you are doing this I would add your smoked salmon to the stove, unless, of course, you prefer raw smoked salmon which works just as well if that’s your style.

Then, with however much smoked salmon you like, add it to your bread, olive oil or safflower oil mayonnaise, and Dijon mustard.

Then, slice up some tomatoes, and put them on top. And, though I forgot it in these pictures, I would also add chia seeds for digestion.

And because peaches are delicious, I sliced those up and had them as a side but you can choose any fruit. These were fresh and sweet, which cut the salt from the smoked salmon.

With a cold glass of water or hot tea, this is the perfect go-to breakfast. It literally takes seconds to make and it’s delicious whenever and wherever. You could also add avocado, if that’s your thing. But I was lazy, so today it was not my thing. Whatever. Don’t judge.

5 Easy Steps to Surviving the DMV

Picture1.2I don’t have a car. Yet. And I’m not allowed behind the wheel. Yet. I don’t even have a permit. Yet. ¬†While we’re on the subject, I haven’t eaten. Yet.

But that didn’t keep me from going to the DMV with my sister while she went to go get her permit. Like¬†most people we woke up at the butt crack of dawn in order to get there before the masses. But just like us, most people had that idea and we didn’t get there before then, but we still got a prime parking spot right in front of the building. It was literally melting outside and I was sitting in the car next to somebody who likes to smoke, and so because I like to live, I had to stay in the car with the window rolled up. While there I came up with five easy steps on how to survive the DMV

Step 1: Bring Food.

Food is a creature comfort. And while at the DMV, dealing with attitudes and clipped responses, you need comfort. So rather than talking to that creepy guy that is literally breathing down your neck behind you and smells like crackers and cologne, go sit down and stuff your mouth with some snacks. What I brought:

A Kashi bar, which this one in particular is actually a lot saltier than you’d think it’d be. It’s got chocolate, which is not overly sweet, and almonds.¬†They’re surprisingly filling and great when you’re in a hurry or, in this case, trying to avoid talking to somebody. This is what they look like melted because in order to tell if something is good, you need to see it melted:

Don’t forget your fruit (I’m being funny, by the way, I know apples aren’t fruits):

Applesauce. We get these in boxes from Costco. And because they’re easy and portable (and I didn’t bring a spoon), I just slurped it up, using my tongue to reach what wouldn’t slide out. It’s an art form with classes available UCSAGE (Sign up before all the spots are taken!).

It was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, when we went. So, I couldn’t forget to hydrate. I was:

Step 2: Bring Something to Read

There are so many different ways to read nowadays, so choose your favorite. I personally prefer the real thing to reading something on a device or getting it read to me. How do you prefer to read? If you’re not a big reader or wouldn’t know what to read, stop by the library the day before and try a new genre. Or if you usually only read romances, pick up a sci-fi or mystery. If that’s not really your thing, try a different version of romance. Like a romantic comedy, mystery romance, paranormal romance, or erotica. If it’s already hot, why not turn it up a notch?!

I brought Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman. It was my first time reading it, and¬† because I absolutely adored the movie I thought why not try the book? Because you always judge a book by it’s movie. I learned that from the Twilight course at UCSAGE.


Step 3: Bring A Journal

Just because you bring a journal doesn’t mean you have to write in it, if writing is not your thing or you simply can’t think of anything to write. You can always sketch or try drawing a cartoon from memory such as SpongeBob or Diego.

Step 4: Bring Music

The radio doesn’t always have what you need, I know this from experience. I clean up the kitchen every other day on rotation with my kid sister and when I do I like to listen to music. More specifically, the radio, because some of (most of) the music on my mp3 is dated. And sometimes (most of the time), when I clean the kitchen, the radio is doing a segment of about 2 hours of slow jams. Like,¬†oh my¬†gosh.¬†What the frak? Jump off of her and go to sleep so I can listen to music that is actually worth my while. It is a Tuesday and you have work tomorrow you guys do not need to be smashing pancakes right now. And besides, who’s going to want to listen to a remix of Love in the Club while they’re getting it on, only for the next thing to play to be five minutes of ads? Talk about a mood killer.

Anywho, try downloading a few new songs or listening to some old songs you downloaded and haven’t heard in a while. Note: On my mp3 (which shows the wrong time, by the way), I changed the language to Korean to help me learn Hangeul, which I have actually gotten pretty good at:

Step 5: People Watch

Last but not least, there’s always the ever fun people watching. My sisters and I like to pick out people, guess their names and their background. Or we’ll choose some random guy and pretend that guy’s one of our boyfriends. Guessing what they’re saying is also a blast.

How To Tell If You Like Indie Music

indie music part 1 According to Wikipedia (a website everybody knows, loves, trustsРincluding your teacher) there are many types of Indie musicРIndie dance, Indie electronic, Indie folk, Indie hip hop, Indie pop, and Indie rockРall of which sometimes blend together. I know when I think of Indie music I think of either really slow music where they sing about death and the world ending (same difference) or I think of fast music with kooky beats where they sing about death and the world ending. But as I went on my quest to finding new music to listen to I found that this is far from the truth (with most of them, anyways).

Indie music is just that, independent music. Music- separate from major producers. It’s an alternative way¬†for artists to express themselves through their craft.¬† There is also indie art, design, literature and a more widely known indie film. There is a whole indie-verse. Like a buffy-verse but not…

When I first started my search I thought that I hadn’t heard and liked any indie music. Ever. But it turns out a lot of the songs that I listen to and like a lot are indie. Examples being Do I Wanna Know? by Artic Monkeys , Fitzpleasure by Alt-J (‚ąÜ)¬†and Eyes on Fire and Equilibrium¬†by Blue Foundation. You’d be surprised to find that a lot of the music you listen to is also indie. More mainstream examples would be¬†Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People and Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye.

Speaking of the past, the above mentioned songs are both¬†categorized in the genre¬†Indie Pop– which is just like regular pop except more indie. The beats are ones you don’t hear in everyday songs–they were catchy yet smooth and velvety–which is why they were so popular in 2010-2011.

I found a website that posts new indie songs everyday in all of the above mentioned genres. It’s called “Indie Shuffle”¬†and has been so, so¬†¬†sooo so so¬†so so so¬†helpful in my search that it’s floetic (see what I did there? Probably not…). I am going to go through all of the indie genres (before moving onto a different type of music, like hip hop or something), starting with Indie Pop to see which one I like more, if any– which there will be one, but just in case there isn’t I said that. ūüėČ

I found a lot of songs that I liked in this genre so this will be a part 1 part 2 post showing you some of my favorite songs.

I liked this song because her voice sounded magical. The beat reminds me of a happy scene in a movie where the couple are lazily rolling around in the bed and laughing¬† as the sun just comes up. If you can’t understand a word she’s saying,¬†like I couldn’t when I first heard it, the actual song on sound cloud has the lyrics.

This song is a little more up beat and slightly more like a modern version of indie. It’s catchy and though I am not too sure what she’s saying, it gives me serious Janet Jackson in the eighties feel.

This song is ambient which I love. When it gets to the chorus it becomes very inspirational and soothing at the same time.

I realized, writing this, that indie music (well at least indie pop) has the tendency to make their lyrics incoherent and run on like a new language–¬†but I think that gives it it’s ethereal “indie” feeling which I have a feeling I will come to love if I haven’t already.¬† Also, all of their covers have images of girls with missing faces so…yeah.
